Authority-to-act forms for agents and advisers.
Mortgage advisers, insurance brokers, accountants and immigration advisers often need a client's written authority before a bank, insurer or other organisation will speak with them. The form is short and the client usually wants it done immediately. Here is how to send your own form and get it back the same day.
What this guide covers, and what it does not
This is about the everyday authority a client gives an adviser to deal with someone on their behalf, using a form your practice or the receiving organisation supplies. It is not about powers of attorney or enduring powers of attorney, which have their own signing steps. If you are unsure which document you need, ask your adviser before sending anything.
Some organisations insist on their own form. Check what the bank or insurer will accept before you set up a template.
Fields that make the form usable
An authority form is only useful if the receiving organisation can match it to the right customer. Ask for the identifying details they need.
- The client's full name, signature and date.
- Text fields for a policy, account or client number.
- Tick boxes for each thing the adviser may do, such as obtain information or request changes.
- A date field for when the authority ends, if your form has one.
- An upload field for ID, if the organisation asks for it.
Joint clients
Where a mortgage or policy is held jointly, many organisations want every account holder to give authority. Add each person as a signer with their own email address and they can sign at the same time. If a company holds the account, add each director the organisation expects to see.
Sending it on
Once signed, copy the form to whoever needs it by adding them as a copy recipient, or download the completed file and send it through the organisation's preferred channel. The completion certificate shows when and by whom the authority was signed, which answers the first question a call centre usually asks.
Keeping track across many clients
Advisers can have dozens of authorities out at once. The envelope list shows which clients have signed and which have not, and automatic reminders follow up the rest. Connecting your AI assistant lets you ask which authority forms are still waiting, without opening each envelope.
Common questions
- Can I use SignAndGo for a power of attorney?
- This guide is about everyday authority-to-act forms only. Powers of attorney have their own signing steps, so take advice on those.
- Can both holders of a joint account sign?
- Yes. Add each as a signer and each receives their own link.
- Can the bank or insurer receive the signed form directly?
- You can copy them in, or download the completed form and send it the way they ask.
